Week of December 14th -18th
EVERYONE is Finally done with their Circle Graph about their compelling character! At this point it is ALL exemplar. GREAT JOB!
We continue our work with negatives by playing a game of Cards. It's "I declare War" or "War" except the red cards are negative!
Who wins between a 3 of diamonds and the 9 of Diamonds? The 3 of Diamonds...
For Negative numbers it is the number closest to Zero!
Who wins betwee a 3 of spades and the 9 of Clubs? The 9 of Clubs...
For Positive numbers it is always the number FARTHER from Zero!
Who wins between a 3 of spades and the Queen of Hearts? The 3 of Spades... Positive is ALWAYS greater!
Play the game at home...it is really importand that we get a good understanding of the INTEGER NUMBER LINE!
We will also begin adding integers (using the number line) this week.
EXHIBITION NIGHT is DECEMBER 16th from 6:15 - 8:15...BE THERE!

ACCENTUATE THE NEGATIVE!!!!
We begin our work with negative numbers...It's about time! This week we explore negatives on a number line and compare their values. Why is -500 smaller than -300?
Between what two integers is -6.5? What is an integer? What is absolute value?
All these exciting questions (and more!) will be answered this week.
We will also spend some time taking the RCSD 7th grade benchmark...We are polishing off our Circle Graphs so they will be exemplary pieces of math work. They will be on display for Exhibition Night on December 16th...Plan on attending!

Week of November 30- December 4th
This is the last week of the marking period and it is VERY busy.
We will take all of our survey results and decipher which infomation each group can use to make their character even more compelling. We will work on Circle Graphs for our Proposal Project and for Exhibition Night. Though the graph may look simple, there is a great deal of math behind it! Our final product will count as a test grade for this marking period.
On Friday we will start a new unit on integers...you know...zero, positive and negative whole numbers. Feel free to talk about situations that involve negative numbers...temperature, credit/debt, weight loss.
BINDER CHECKS are this week. Remember, they are 10% of each marking period grade!

Week of November 23-24
Last weeks surveying adventure was awesome...many of our scholars were initially nervous and unenthusiastic. Once we got out in the community we had a great time. We met lots of different people (our sample) who all wanted to share their opinions. We asked them questions created the day before by the three classes and went to places on the map to which the students justified their choice of location. We compiled our data and will be created circle graphs regarding the results and will use the information to support a street being named after our compelling characters.
This week we have a TEST on Tuesday. It will cover percents, surveying methods and circle graphs.

Week of November 16 - 20th
A FULL WEEK!
This is a pretty exciting week in Math class. We get to work on our part of the 7th grade expedition...The Road to Freedom: Rochester's Compelling Characters.
We will learn what makes a good survey, what a sample is, what types of sampling methods there are and how to create an unbiased question. We will create our own survey that we hope we can use to support our proposal to rename a street in Rochester. We will be interviewing the Rochester Public on Wednesday, and use that data to compile circle graphs. Should be a fun filled week.
Students were given Progress Reports on Monday the 16th. The homework return rate has gone way down!

Week of October 13- 16th
What happened to last weeks post???
We worked on combining like terms, two step equations and the distributive property.
Anyway...We take a mini break from some of our higher level algebra to work on ratio's and proportions!!! How awesome is that?
We write a few and use strategies (hint: algebra) to determine if ratios are equal. We also work on unit rates (think...for one), this should make us all better shoppers! We will use "center time" on Wednesday to review the Distributive Property.
The marking period ends on Friday. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE WORK will be accepted after Friday. I will be entering my grades on Friday night.

Our expedition has begun!!
In Math we will spend Monday and Tuesday taking the RCSD benchmark tests.
We finally get to experience our first Math Centers on Wednesday. We will be reinforcing how to solve ONE STEP Equations and work on the "CUPID CODE" which was created during the American Revolution. After our field trip to Mt. Hope we will explore some code based on linear equations.
There is a VOCABULARY QUIZ on Friday.
Binder Check will be Friday and Monday (this is 10% of your grade).
Progress report have been sent home. Any missing assignments have been given a grade of ZERO. ALL reports are to be signed by parents.
A VERY busy and exciting week.
CURRICULUM NIGHT IS WEDNESDAY FROM 6:30 - 8:00. See you then!!!

Week of September 21 - 25th
We start out our week with s-t-r-e-t-c-h codes. To code you must multiply and to decipher you must divide. We will also be working on Algebra Equations that use Multiplication and Division to solve. We will work on two step equations by the end of the week and have a quiz on Friday about solving one step equations.
On Wednesday we will have our first Math Centers day. It should be fun and productive.
EXTRA HELP!!!! I have attached two more video links to help you with the work in our class. The textbooks will be given out this week and we will check out how to use them as a tool... ALSO, I am hoping that students will be willing to stay after school (from 2:30 - 3:00) for more individualized help...Tuesdays are ALWAYS open for extra help. If you want to stay any other day, just let me know ahead of time.

We continue our work with Codes this Week. We explore some shift and stretch codes. We are working on ciphering and deciphering them. We will also explore some of the codes that Benedict Arnold used! We continue our work on Order of Operations and have our first Quiz on Thursday.
Remember...there is Math homework given every Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday!!! If you are stuck, check out the video.
So far I have been very impressed with all of the scholars and their eagerness to show me how much they know.

Week of September 8 - 11th
Welcome back from Labor Day Weekend!
This week we will continue our work with CODES. There is a great deal of math involved in encoding and deciphering Secret Code. We will spend the next several weeks revisiting how codes are created and solved. This will increase our skills in using Order of Operations, Solving Algebra Problems, and using Linear Equations.
This week we will take some time to organize our binders (10% of the MP Grade). We will also take a practice 7th grade state test to see what we already know and what we need to work on.
If anyone is having trouble with Order of Operations click on the EXTRA HELP VIDEO Link to the left. There are several sample problems and links to watch a teacher (sorry...not near as awesome as I am) solve similar problems. It's a GREAT resource for students and parents!
We will be going on a field trip on Wednesday to the historic Mt. Hope cemetary.

Welcome!
A brand new school year in a brand new school! Pretty exciting stuff.
This year will be a thrilling experience for us all.
Welcome to my blog spot. The purpose of it is to provide my students and their families with another tool to help them be successful in math. I will do my best to post a weekly note about what we are studying in class along with some links to help our scholars out with many different math skills. I have some videos that I will post that go along with the text book, these will demonstrate how to solve some of the homework problems. There will also be some games that will reinforce some skills that might need to be worked on to help us be successful. Our goal for the year is to complete 7th and 8th grade math by June... No problem if we all work hard!
