Week of April 5 - 9th

Though we are continuing with our nutrition and food drive project, we will be mixing in a few new things and review for the NYS Math test (it is the first week of May) This week we will be exploring square roots and the the Pythagorean Theorum. We love right triangles!

How much nutrition can you fit in a grocery bag?

We have begun our math part of our Spring Expedition...
We will be donating bags of nonperishable food to Mercy House in Rochester...
What does that have to do with math? Plenty....Student groups are given the task of calculating which foods are the most dense in a nutritional component (ex: protein or calcium). They are going to compare items based on how much of that item is present in one cubic inch of packaging.
To accomplish all this we need to know about nutritional recommendations, surface area and volume of rectangular prisms and cyclinders, ratios and proportions. Students will have to use Math to support their final recommendations for the bag. We will finish off the unit with a food drive of specific items that will go in our WOIS grocery bag.
This week we have a nutritionist from MCC coming to share with us how to read a food label and give us recommendations. We will also do some work with flattened packaging from groceries and begin discussing surface area!

Week of February 22-26th

This week we will be working on a few "odd ball" math concepts. We will be exploring angle relationships (complementary, supplementary, vertical and congruent). We will use some algebra to find missing angles.
We will do some work with square roots. EVERYONE needs to have all of the perfect squares (of 1-15) memorized (1,4,9,16, etc..) We will also talk about the number system!
PROGRESS REPORTS WENT HOME MONDAY!

Week of February 8 - 12th

We got so caught up in our integers and algebra that I forgot to post! SORRY!
This week we will work on Inequalities...how to write them algebraically and how to show them on a graph (the solution set)...No Centers on Wednesday because we will go to the science room to ge a hint about our investigation. On Thursday we will have our EXPEDITION LAUNCH!!! We are starting off the day with a healthy breakfast for all!
We will have a QUIZ friday about solving 2 step equations.

Week of January 11 - 15th

Ms. Drake is at a conference on Monday (busy thinking up all sorts of ways to torture you with math :) Ms. Northrup (our intern from Wells College) will lead us in a whiteboard challenge about adding integers.

We continue our work with subrtracting integers...we'll continue with chips, use the number line and see if we can't come up with some shortcuts of our own! Quiz on Friday! Binder check will be January 21st...so get organized!

WEEK OF jANUARY 4 - 8

We continue our work with integers...This week we use the examples of the confederacy verse the union to understand how to add integers. Which ever army has the most soldiers wins! We will have a quiz on Thursday about ordering integers from least to greatest and adding integers. We will begin working on subtracting integers which is VERY tricky.
Try some of the integer games!
