How much nutrition can you fit in a grocery bag?

We have begun our math part of our Spring Expedition...
We will be donating bags of nonperishable food to Mercy House in Rochester...
What does that have to do with math? Plenty....Student groups are given the task of calculating which foods are the most dense in a nutritional component (ex: protein or calcium). They are going to compare items based on how much of that item is present in one cubic inch of packaging.
To accomplish all this we need to know about nutritional recommendations, surface area and volume of rectangular prisms and cyclinders, ratios and proportions. Students will have to use Math to support their final recommendations for the bag. We will finish off the unit with a food drive of specific items that will go in our WOIS grocery bag.
This week we have a nutritionist from MCC coming to share with us how to read a food label and give us recommendations. We will also do some work with flattened packaging from groceries and begin discussing surface area!
